Freight Transport Benefits high focus on Climate Policy Agenda in Marrakech COP 22
The COP 22 Conference stressed on Sustainable freight plans which include reducing transport and emission intensities, optimizing supply chains, and improving fuel efficiency. The captains of the Transport industry who were gathered in Marrakech urged African countries to leverage on existing frameworks such as the Northern Corridor Green Freight Programme and share knowledge on these successful initiatives.
Implementation of the Mombasa Port Community Charter, two years on
From June 2014 to June 2016, some indicators especially the Maritime have been achieved. Prior to 2014 on average, vessel waiting time was 2.5 days though some vessels waiting up-to 7 days. Currently the vessel waiting time is less than 10 hours where the target is 24 hours. Good progress was also registered as regards the vessel turnaround time where prior to 2014, was between 5 and 7 days. Currently vessel turnaround time is at an average of about 3.5 days. Target is 3 days.
NCTTCA in Partnership with UNEP on Five year (2017-2021) Green Freight Programme
In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) is undertaking its five year (2017-2021) Green Freight Programme which is aimed at supporting a number of initiatives intended to reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the Northern Corridor Member States. The Green Freight Programme is a launching pad of a phased implementation of a holistic Sustainable Freight Transport Strategy which entails, in particular, sustainable transport policies, planning strategies and investment decisions that effectively balance the economic, environmental and social objectives.
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) officially submits ratification instruments of the Northern Corridor Agreement

The 28th Council of Ministers of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) was held on 23rd June 2016 in Mombasa, Republic of Kenya, under the theme "Green Freight Transport for a Competitive and Sustainable Economic Corridor".
Validation of the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) study and Guidelines
In an increasingly competitive global environment, most developed countries focus on new ways of financing infrastructure development and delivering services, such as Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). Public Private Partnerships being a new concept in most of Northern Corridor Countries, there are no clear guidelines and procedures for its implementation and projects monitoring. And Northern Corridor Member States are yet to fully comprehend and utilize such financing methods.
NCTTCA, UNCTAD & UNEC in partnership to promote and support the implementation of the sustainable freight transport
The Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) has embarked in partnership with United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) on an endeavour of promoting and supporting the implementation of the sustainable freight transport systems and strategy across the Northern trade route through the component of Green Freight Program as pilot scheme.
NCTTCA Secretariat Hosts the Kenya-Ethiopia joint Technical Corridor Coordinating Committee (TCCC) meeting on the Mombasa-Nairobi-Isiolo-Moyale-Addis Ababa Road Corridor
Road Authorities both in Kenya and Ethiopia are working closely to speed up the harmonization of Traffic and Vehicle Load Control rules to ease the movement of goods along the Mombasa-Nairobi-Isiolo-Moyale-Addis Ababa highway. As per the set schedule, the Vehicle Load control rules will start to be enforced by January 2017.
Mombasa Port volumes on the increase- from 24.88 million tons handled in 2014 to 26.7 million tons of cargo handled in 2015
In 2015, Mombasa Port handled 26.7 million tons of cargo, compared to 24.88 million tons handled in 2014. Import totaled 22.68 million tons from 20.77 million tons handled in 2014. Exports also increased to 3.53 million tons from 3.37 million in 2014.
